YGEH 101 #YEG edition Part 1

Hey guys, You Gotta Eat Here… you know from the Food Network. Part one will be a crash course on YGEH Edmonton restaurants I have already been to (basically season 1 to 4 from the show) and Part two, which will be released later, will be about surrounding Edmonton area YGEH restaurants, closed down ones and season 5 restaurants which I plan on going to soon.

About a year and a half ago, my girlfriend and I were contemplating on what to do and where to eat, we did not want to go to any chain restaurants and wanted to ty something different (I went to almost all of these restaurants here with her). We were watching the Food Network the night before and we didn’t think there is be that many recommendations in Edmonton, but surprisingly there is. The YGEH list of restaurants inspired me to try out different restaurant and I hope one day, I try them all. Without further ado, this is my quick review on all the YGEH restaurants in Edmonton (well, season 1-4 only).

My first YGEH restaurant is Soda Jerks. I remember I really really really wanted to try Doris (2 half lb beef patties, cheese, bacon, egg, lettuce, onion, tomato, mayo and 2 bacon grill cheese) and get a free t-shirt, if you finish eating it, but I opted for a normal burger and soda instead… good thing I did. The normal burger was still a pretty hefty in size and if I recall, I don't think I even finished my fries. One thing I would like to say is, they are so popular now. They have expanded to multiple locations in Edmonton: West Point, Namao Centre, West Granville and St. Albert.

A week later, still like a year and a half ago, my girlfriend and I went to Fine Southern Cookin’ Louisiana Purchase. I had the jambalaya, it was huge, and I was so full afterward I had to just sit there to digest. Located right outside of MacEwan University, the large portions, great service and food is a great lunch or dinner stop.

Highlevel Diner is the third YGEH restaurant I have been to, it is located right next to Sugarbowl and across the street from Urban Diner. Yes, it is a cluster of restaurants and great food – decisions, decisions… The Highlevel Diner was very unique, with many local paintings and drawings on the wall (which you can purchase) and in-house ketchup (which you can also buy), the food was simply amazing.

No surprise the next location I went to is the Sugarbowl. No...it was not the same day. After running 5k at Color Me Rad 2014, my friends and I decided to head over to the Sugarbowl for lunch. Unfortunately, we were not the only ones who decided to go, I think it took us about 30 ish mins to get in. Sugarbowl is a local hotspot for food, well they have more beers and drinks than actual food itself… A must-have is their chicken and waffle, you cannot go wrong, trust me.

7 weeks later… Urban Diner is actually the only YGEH restaurant I have been to twice! Once with my girlfriend and once with a friend. Surprisingly, I actually sat in the same booth both times. Coming from the Fringe festival, the Urban Diner is a great stop (no, I did not purposely go to this cluster one after another on purpose). The first time I had the burger and fries and the second time I had mac and cheese. Both were incredible.

Not too long after, my girlfriend and I stopped by The Dish Bistro. It was a small and cozy restaurant with large flavors – kind of a romantic restaurant (make sure you park behind the bistro, it is free). The one thing I remember was the gourmet mac and cheese that my girlfriend ordered, I kept wanting to take more than a bite off of her entrée.

If your in downtown, you cannot miss going to Tres Carnales. It is a staple restaurant to go to (they are also the same owners of Rostizado, another YGEH restaurant in season 5). Just get anything. It will be the best tacos you will eat in Edmonton. If you go during regular lunch or dinner hours, be prepared to wait.

After Tres Carnales, I didn't eat at any Edmonton YGEH restaurants for a while, I started eating at ‘other’ restaurants. Sofra is the first one I went to after my little break. After Animethon 22, my girlfriend and I headed to Sofra for a late dinner. Located also right outside of MacEwan University, Sofra is a great filling restaurant to go to.

Now only 2 months ago, the last YGEH restaurant I went to was Sloppy Hoggs Roed Hus. Man, it was huge, like I mean enormous portions at a great price. After the Luluemon warehouse sale, my girlfriend and I were hungry, the long lines and tons of walking took a toll on us. Sloppy Hoggs Roed Hus is located not too far away from Northlands/ Rexall, it is a great pit stop or break between events.
